In a recent study, an Indian think tank, the Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), has revealed an intriguing perspective on the future of work in the age of artificial intelligence. The report, titled "AI and Jobs: This Time Is No Different", challenges the notion that AI will immediately decimate job opportunities, especially in India's thriving IT services sector.

ICRIER's research suggests that AI is not a job-killer, but rather a job-shaper. The organization surveyed 651 IT firms and interviewed industry leaders, finding that while hiring has stabilized, there is a strong demand for roles that are most exposed to AI, such as software analysts, developers, and mathematicians. This hiring trend indicates that AI is complementing high-skill technical work rather than replacing it.

While 28% of the surveyed firms expect to hire more workers due to AI, a notable 27% believe their headcount will shrink. However, the majority (44%) anticipate no major changes. An interesting twist is that more than half of the respondents expect to slow down hiring for entry-level positions, indicating a potential shift in the job market dynamics.
ICRIER remains cautiously optimistic about its projections, believing that history might repeat itself. The study states, "Many of the most impactful technology-driven jobs will be created by startups yet to be established or currently taking shape in classrooms and garages." The study highlights a skills gap, with a shortage of workers proficient in large language model operations and a lack of investment in training and upskilling. "The shortage of qualified AI trainers and the limited AI skills among new labor market entrants are challenges that must be addressed urgently," the study warns.
