In a captivating blend of tradition and innovation, Thought Parallels Architecture has crafted the Ananda house, a residence that pays homage to India's rich architectural heritage while embracing contemporary design principles. But can a modern home truly capture the essence of vernacular architecture?
This stunning house, located in Kerala, India, is a masterpiece of local craftsmanship and a response to the clients' desire for a residence that echoes their ancestral roots. The couple, based in the USA, commissioned Thought Parallels Architecture to create a space that evokes the region's vernacular architecture in a fresh and modern way.
And this is where it gets intriguing... The architects drew inspiration from the local vernacular, using materials such as red brick, mangalore clay tiles, teak wood, and intricate carved fretwork panels. But the true star of the show is the massive coconut wood roof, which provides deep shade and a unique character to the house. The firm's partners, Nikhil Mohan and Shabna Nikhil, describe the concept as "reinventing the old into a contemporary voice." They aimed to create an Indian, sustainable, and artsy home that speaks to the present while honoring the past.
Stepping into the house, one is greeted by a breathtaking double-height living space, where the concrete spiral staircase becomes the focal point, drawing eyes upwards to the exposed, artfully angled roof beams. The use of coconut wood in the roof is a bold statement, as Mohan and Nikhil explain, "...evoking a dynamic effect and adding a unique aesthetic, a modern twist to the local vernacular." Interestingly, coconut wood, once a traditional yet underappreciated material in Kerala, has been given new life as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to teak.
The house's design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces. The northern wall, fully glazed, opens onto a garden terrace, while the upper living area and study on the first floor offer tranquil views of the tree canopies. The home's air conditioning units are discreetly hidden behind intricately carved wooden panels, inspired by the 16th-century Padmanabhapuram Palace. Teak wood frames the windows and doors, complementing the lime-plastered walls and stone-tiled floors, creating a harmonious flow between the interior and the patio.
The southern side of the house features two ensuite bedrooms, shielded from the sun by a screen of timber slats. These slats not only provide privacy but also allow for natural ventilation when the windows are opened. The angular brick walls of the bedroom block are finished in red brickwork, with a unique pattern at the corners, adding a touch of visual interest.
The basement, accessed via the spiral staircase, provides additional space for a garage and storage. Thought Parallels Architecture has successfully created a residence that not only meets the clients' brief but also stands as a testament to the beauty of blending traditional and modern design.
