A proposed social media policy could drive millions of travelers away from the United States, industry experts warn. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) surveyed nearly 5,000 international travelers and found that one-third would be less likely to visit the US if they are required to submit social media account information. This could result in a significant loss of revenue for the travel sector, estimated at $15.7 billion. Gloria Guevara, president of WTTC, warns that the policy could cost the US over 150,000 jobs and put the country at a competitive disadvantage. The policy, which would affect travelers from over 30 countries, is seen as intrusive and could make the US less welcoming. The US Travel Association agrees, stating that the policy could have a chilling effect on travel to the US, with potential negative consequences for marquee events like the FIFA World Cup and America's 250th birthday celebration. The Trump administration's recent immigration crackdowns have further fueled concerns in the travel sector, with fears that international visitors will choose other destinations.
