With a price tag that's a fraction of their natural counterparts, lab-grown diamonds are shaking up the traditional diamond market. But here's where it gets controversial: despite their affordability, some consumers are paying significantly more than others for virtually identical stones.
Take the story of Toronto residents Daniel Ng and Olivia Chan. When they were ring shopping in 2024, the choice for a lab-grown diamond was an easy one, primarily due to the substantial cost difference compared to natural diamonds. Experts agree, stating that lab-grown diamonds can be up to 90% cheaper than their natural equivalents.
However, a Marketplace investigation uncovered a surprising price disparity. CBC journalists purchased two lab-grown diamonds with identical features: one carat, D-colour, ideal cut, VS1 clarity, and a round shape. One diamond, from leading online retailer Blue Nile, cost a whopping $1,639.23 CAD, while the other, sourced from online marketplace Alibaba.com, was a mere $228.86 all-in. That's a massive difference!
Marketplace's review of other online retailers revealed comparable stones listed for as much as $1,500 before fees and taxes. Ng and Chan were shocked to learn about the Alibaba diamond's price, stating, "We had no idea."
So, why the variation? Paul Zimnisky, a diamond industry analyst, suggests that the profit margin potential for lab-grown diamonds is enticing for jewelers. He warns that this could lead to "credibility problems" within the industry. Zimnisky believes that some retailers are pricing lab-grown diamonds well above their actual value, taking advantage of consumers' lack of awareness about the true production costs.
Both lab-grown diamonds purchased by Marketplace came with reports from the International Gemological Institute (IGI), confirming their characteristics. To ensure the legitimacy of the Alibaba purchase, Marketplace sent the diamond back to IGI for verification, as counterfeiting is a known concern on online marketplaces.
The diamonds were then appraised by accredited jewelry appraisers, Eddy and Allan Young, who determined that the Blue Nile and Alibaba diamonds were, in fact, identical in quality. Despite this, the Blue Nile diamond was valued at $1,925 CAD, while the Alibaba diamond was appraised at $900.
When asked about the price discrepancy, Blue Nile's parent company, Signet Jewelers, declined an interview but stated that their brand's reputation and trusted quality are key factors for customers. The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) also refused to comment, stating that it's "impossible to set uniform guidelines" for pricing within the industry.
Eddy Young advises consumers to be cautious when purchasing directly from foreign manufacturers and suggests checking reviews, using secure payment methods like credit cards or PayPal, and having diamonds appraised for authenticity.
Zimnisky predicts that general prices for lab-grown diamonds will eventually align more closely with wholesale levels. Ng and Chan expressed their desire for more consistent pricing across the industry, stating, "You don't want to spend more than you should."
Chan added, "It's good that [lab-grown diamonds] are more accessible to everyone. No gatekeeping. People deserve to have what they want at fair prices."
